Strategy Director


The Strategy Department serves as a Trusted Advisor and Champion of American Modern’s strategic initiatives.
The Strategy Director position reports directly to the VP / Head of Strategy & CEO Office. This position leads the Company’s development, monitoring, tracking, and execution of American Modern’s strategy and related strategic initiatives. including the development of supporting market research and change management plans to support the functional execution of the Company’s strategy.

Additionally, this role supports the CEO Office, namely assisting in potential Mergers & Acquisitions projects, execution of internally and externally focused projects, managing the Executive Management Board (EMB) meetings, serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO in creating content and communications cadence, such as for board meetings, strategy presentations, and external & internal written communications and speaker assignments. This role also serves the members of EMB in conducting ad-hoc research and analysis to inform the overarching strategic decision-making process. Finally, the Strategy Director plays a critical role in bridging the connection between and among the EMB, senior leadership team, and associates.
This role provides unique, hands-on experience and leadership opportunities, with exposure to executive and senior leadership in driving American Modern’s future success.
Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Develop and regularly report robust competitor benchmarking analysis, industry emerging trends, and macro-economic forces, and provide proactive, value-add insights on the impacts to American Modern and recommend strategic initiatives to both the executive and senior leadership teams, in order to address opportunities or gaps
  • Collaborate with all parts of the business (including American Modern’s Financial Planning & Analysis, Pricing, Product, Underwriting, Sales, Customer Experience, Human Resources, and Innovation and Digital functions) to embed external market analysis to drive the cross-functional development, monitoring, and alignment of strategic initiatives and financial planning
  • Assist in the identification and evaluation of M&A targets (as informed through market and industry trend research) and related due diligence, including building external relationships and networks to identify attractive targets
  • Lead the Company’s change management activities, serving as a coach for business/product owners to develop, own and maintain standardized tools, templates, and processes meant to enable project teams to manage change on their respective initiatives and drive customer adoption of the new services/experiences
  • Maintain, monitor, track and report on the status of strategic initiatives and senior leadership action plans, challenging the measurements of success and status, where appropriate
  • Execute internally focused projects and initiatives aimed at improving Company-wide governance and/or efficiencies, such as decision-making authorities, stakeholder management communication, etc.
  • Perform 'deep dives' into the results and optimization of products, distribution channels, agents and regions, providing recommendations to executive and/or senior leadership to capitalize on strategic advantages or correct disadvantages
  • Develop, and/or partner with executive or senior leadership to develop, business cases for strategic priorities and/or capital expenditures, as well as author strategy white papers to communicate and challenge the Company's strategic initiatives, informed by financial analyses (developed in conjunction with the Financial Planning & Analysis function, as appropriate), supporting or challenging these business cases
  • Support adherence to the EMB Charter, including the preparation and coordination of business meeting agendas, preparing meeting minutes, cross-functional stakeholder management and presentations, and other internal communications
  • Drive alignment of and develop content for strategic communications
  • Serve as internal consultant to executive and/or senior leadership in develop divisional and/or departmental strategic initiatives
  • Support Munich Re One Voice initiatives through collaboration and sharing of insights and/or best practices, as appropriate


  • 10+ years of relevant experience; M&A experience is an important plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Accounting, Finance or insurance business field); MBA is a plus
  • Ability to interact with and influence across multiple levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process improvement/projects and drive project completion
  • Strong business and strategic acumen with the ability to work across multiple functions including the International parent company
  • Senior Executive level presentation and business writing skills and ability to tell a compelling story in words, numbers and pictures
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail
  • Insurance experience and experience in public accounting
