Principal Account Engineer (Internal Title: Principal Risk Specialist) – Work Remote from any United States Location

Become an integral member of HSB’s heavy industry engineering team. In this role, you will evaluate businesses in power generation, steel, aluminum, mining, pulp & paper, sugar, manufacturing, glass, and similar industries. Team members create standards, evaluate accounts, and visit factories & power plants.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver timely and concise evaluations of accounts for HSB and Munich Re underwriters in heavy industries that typically include power generation, steel, aluminum, mining, pulp & paper, sugar, manufacturing, and glass.
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge and experience to provide detailed risk evaluations of assigned active accounts and potential new customers by interpreting factors such as design, condition, operations, maintenance, and human elements.
  • Determine how to improve or manage the account’s risk through account engineering, loss control initiatives, and consultative risk control engineering services which includes visits to insured locations.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of engineering standards and guidelines on multiple high risk occupancies.
  • Provide training and leadership to other Risk Specialists, loss control engineers, and underwriters.


  • 15+ years of experience in operations, maintenance, inspection, or insurance engineering of process equipment associated with high value occupancies such as power generation, steel, aluminum, mining, pulp & paper, sugar, or glass.
  • 5+ years of experience leading personnel on overhaul, operation, or installation of major equipment is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline is preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the machinery, operations, repair timelines, and process flow of multiple high risk occupancies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Self-starter; able to work with limited supervision and manage competing priorities.
  • Understanding of insurance industry and underwriting terms is a plus.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% of the time.
