Primary Objectives:
HSB Canada’s Head Office Engineering Department (HOED) is the hub for technical consultancy and risk assessment of high-exposure risks across North America. Our experienced engineers evaluates operational risks, equipment breakdowns, property loss control, and inherent hazards in diverse industrial processes while providing expert support to various internal departments.
As an Account Engineer, you will cultivate long-term partnerships with key accounts by delivering risk engineering services, by understanding client operations, conducting on-site evaluations, determining risk rankings, quantifying potential losses, and preparing necessary reports. You will also provide technical support to underwriting and claims teams, offering objective assessments of loss events. Additionally, you will contribute to the continuous enhancement of our technical expertise, ensuring our engineering knowledge stays current and impactful.
While prior insurance experience is preferred, we also encourage professionals from heavy industry to explore this unique opportunity to transition into the Insurance Engineering field. If you have a strong engineering background in chemical, process, mechanical, or electrical engineering and possess a natural curiosity and drive to apply your expertise in a meaningful way, this role could be the perfect fit for you.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a deep technical understanding of our insured’s businesses to enable world-class insurance engineering services.
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of complex risks, focusing on equipment, processes, and operations.
- Assess failure modes and potential loss events by analyzing their nature, probability, and magnitude.
- Lead and participate in on-site risk evaluations and field surveys, including interviewing key site personnel to gather critical insights.
- Review and analyze technical data and reports to identify hazards and deficiencies, recommending practical risk improvement solutions to reduce exposures.
- Collaborate with Underwriters and Claims Adjusters, providing expert engineering opinions, calculations, and loss estimates.
- Enhance and share intellectual capital by developing technical articles, educational tutorials, and bulletins to support team learning and industry knowledge.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in chemical, mechanical, electrical disciplines or equivalent.
- A minimum of 7+ years of experience in heavy industry, with exposure to design, maintenance, construction, operation or field services within renewable, power, mining, chemical, nuclear, oil & gas, or manufacturing industries.
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Electrical systems, including Transmission & Distribution, Protection & Control, or Power Systems.
- Boilers and rotating equipment, particularly prime movers for power generation.
- Chemical engineering within oil & gas or other heavy industries.
- Prior experience in insurance engineering is an asset but not required.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles and plant operations, with the ability to identify and quantify potential risks.
- Skilled in interpreting engineering drawings and technical documentation, with proficiency in report writing and MS Office applications.
- Exceptional oral, written, and presentation skills to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed to conduct on-site evaluations for Underwriting and Claims teams.
